Is It Cheaper to Raise Your Own Eggs?

A common question for backyard chicken keepers is whether raising your own eggs actually saves money. The truth is: it depends on what kind of eggs you’re comparing against.

If your goal is to beat the prices of the cheapest grocery store eggs, the answer is almost certainly no. Factory-farmed eggs are raised with grueling efficiency and once you figure in the costs of feed, housing, and equipment (not to mention your own labor) you can't compete financially.

But that's not that whole picture!

If you care about eating highly nutritious and humanely raised eggs, the comparison changes dramatically. Organic pasture-raised eggs sell for $8-10/doz in most grocery stores. When you compare your costs to those prices, you start seeing some real savings.

In fact, you may even be able to raise healthier eggs than you can find in any grocery store!

Many of the brands selling those eggs use heavy doses of "greenwashing" in their marketing, and generally are not as healthy or humane as they try to appear.

Terms like "free-range" and "pasture-raised" are often used to describe operations that do not live up to the consumers' expectations.

The good news is: In your backyard, you get to control the conditions and ensure that they're superb!

Chickens that are moved regulary with constant access to grass, insects, and a varied outdoor diet produce eggs that are superior in both taste and nutrition. If you take that approach, you can absolutely compete with the large producers!

In the end, it comes down to priorities. If price is the only factor, store-bought factory eggs win. But if you value food quality, animal welfare, and nutrition, backyard chickens can offer something you simply can’t buy at the grocery store.
